Executive Board


Guillermo Gutierrez, President

Mr. Gutierrez is an educator with over 20 years of experience having served in a variety of leadership and administrative roles, as well as a history instructor and coach. He comes to Avance after having served as Principal and Vice Principal of the Don Bosco Technical Institute combined for six years. In these roles he was responsible for the daily operations of this premiere technical school of 1,100 students with over 90 faculty members. He also has been on the administration team at the St. John Bosco College Preparatory. Mr. Gutiérrez is a graduate of the Don Bosco Technical Institute, and holds a B.A. in History from UCLA, and a Master's in Education from Stanford University.


Francisco Flores, Treasurer/Secretary

Mr. Flores graduated from CSU Long Beach in Political Science and International Relations. Francisco started working at UCLA in 2008 in various capacities such as an analyst and fund manager before moving into his new role at Chrysalis Los Angeles at the start of 2017. Chrysalis is a nonprofit organization dedicated to creating a pathway to self-sufficiency for homeless and low-income individuals by providing the resources and support needed to find and retain employment.


Carolyn Harris, Board Member 

Ms. Harris has over 25 years of experience in education and has lives in the Los Angeles area. Also involved in a number of non-profit and professional organizations such as the American Association of University Women, Carolyn represented AAUW on Delaine Easton’s Universal Preschool Task Force in 1997.  Carolyn is also active with the National Association for the Education of Young Children and the Church Related Early Childhood Education Fellowship and served on the Los Angeles Child Care Planning Committee 1993-1996, the United Nations Association-USA, The Presbyterian Church in many roles local, state and national, and the Middle East Fellowship of Southern California.


Ellen Haserot, Board Member 

Ms. Haserot attended Stanford University where she earned a BA and then an MA in Education. Following graduation she began teaching in an elementary for Cupertino School District. She has continued to be active in education and volunteering in our community serving on boards for Stanford alumni and Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts. At present she is a volunteer  for leading school tours at the Huntington Library, chair of San Marino Community Church Mission Committee, board member of House of Rest in Pasadena, and active in San Marino League. 


Miguel Juarez, Board Member 

Mr. Juarez is the current president and executive director of Golden State Certified Development Corp., a nonprofit that administers the Small Business Administration’s 504 loan program and Intermediary Loan Program. Prior to joining Golden State, Juarez had been director of small business lending for Valley Economic Development Center, a nonprofit small business lender located in the same Sherman Oaks building as Golden State.


Jose Varela, Board Member
Mr. Varela is an educator with over 20 years of experience having served in a variety of leadership and administrative roles, as well as a history instructor and coach. He comes to Avance after having served as Principal.
