BIO

WELCOME BACK AVANCE STUDENTS, PARENTS, AND VISITORS.  It is my honor to be back for a 11th year here at Avance as your new Co-Principal and returning Athletic Director.

A LITTLE ABOUT MYSELF

I currently have a  Masters in Coaching and Athletic Administration at Concordia University in Irvine. I went to UCLA (go Bruins!) for my undergraduate degree and Mt.St. Marys University for my Teaching Credentials. I love all sports but baseball is my favorite (real ball is life). Love Hip Hop music and great TV series (The Wire, Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, etc). Meal Prep Sundays are my therapy and keep me focused on health goals.

Principal’s Message

To the Classes of 2020, 2021, and 2022, the last school year was really a growing experience for all of us. From our freshmen coming into a new environment, our sophomores improving and new leaders emerging and our juniors now ready for the challenge of their upcoming senior year, it is all due to your work and the efforts of our faculty and staff. OUR school is different. OUR school is closer knit than most because of our size and the adversity we have faced. But if you look at where we started and where we are going, it’s an exciting time. From increasing school spirit through our athletic program, celebration rallies, house competitions and beautification contests, along with the relationships with so many members of our community and our high levels of parent involvement, our school will only continue to grow and prosper.

With new leadership next year, it is up to all of us to continue the work of those before us who built the foundation of our school. Difficult? Yes. Will there be challenges or obstacles? Absolutely. But can it be done? Without a doubt. Our faculty and staff are committed to going above and beyond the call of duty to ensure every student has a chance to succeed. And as long as you bring your effort and commitment to your success, SI SE PUEDE!

Athletic Director Message

The 2018-19 school year was one for the ages for our athletic program. I could not be more proud of the accomplishments and community we built this year as a program. First, I’d like to show massive appreciation for our coaching staff this year for all the work they did.

  • Coach Hugo Lopez (boys and girls volleyball)

  • Coach Veronica Garcia (boys and girls cross country)

  • Coach Michael Fletcher (girls basketball)

  • Coach Erick Smith (boys basketball and middle school boys basketball and admin support)

  • Coach Manny Gallardo (girls soccer and middle school girls soccer)

  • Coach Jazz Rodriguez (boys soccer and middle school boys soccer)

  • Coach Maria Ramirez (middle school girls basketball and admin support)

To the administration and support staff that helps handle all the behind the scenes tasks. Ms. Contreras and Ms. Jolenne Ramirez for all the logistical and planning help, Mr. Tony Polanco for all the transportation and the great job he did supporting all our teams, YPI and Ms. Jennifer Vazquez for their constant support and help in putting together our first Athletics Playoff Rally this year. Mr. Olmos and Mr. Mireles for allowing us to get all the support we need to make the program run effectively. And, Mr. Webb and St. Claire, thank you for all the collaboration in ensuring we always had the program going and our student-athletes were held accountable.

To our teachers, thank you for everything you do in helping our student-athletes succeed. From coming in early to give assignments and tests, allowing make up work, providing tutoring, filling out check in documents and showing undying support to our teams at their game

To our student-athletes and team managers, you have grown our program and shown the dedication it takes to build a successful program. All your time training, in study hall, in class, on the field/gym and supporting each other is why we had the following success:

  • 7 of 8 HS teams made playoffs this year

  • Cross country had both boys and girls finish TOP 5 in the CITY and our girls team won their 3rd straight league title.

  • Boys and Girls Basketball AND Soccer won playoff games (1st in school history)

  • Girls Basketball won their 1st Eastside League title

  • Girls Soccer won their 3rd Eastside League title in 4 years

  • 66% of student-athletes required to do study hall improved and exited out.

  • Our program’s first ever Athletics support bus where student-athletes traveled to support each other during playoffs at night and on weekends.

  • Over 45% of our ENTIRE HS student-body participated in athletics, playing or as a team manage
